Piecework Paintings

This series of paintings explores my relationship with the landscape that has formed me since childhood. Having been raised on an island in Southeast Georgia, I feel very grounded in the presence the undulating marsh and waters of the Intracoastal Waterway. In fact, I was married on a boat in the same waters I saw every single day of my childhood.

These paintings encapsulate the color and patterns found in the marshy landscape. The canvas was painted, then cut and sewn back together in a manner that slightly abstracts the pattern. The piecework brings to mind the idea of a quilt, my way of introducing textile processes into the 2D realm of painting, while nodding to the earliest form of textile art I was taught as a child.
